Workshop

Tezpur University recently organised a two-day workshop for the preparation of Vision NER 2020 on its campus. The event was sponsored by the North Eastern Council.

Prof. P.C. Deka, vice-chancellor of the university, inaugurated the workshop, which was attended by leading academicians, civil administrators, subject specialists, NGOs and students from across the state.

Deka, in his inaugural address, lauded the NEC?s efforts in formulating a Vision document, which envisages a changed socio-economic pattern in the resource-rich Northeast within the next 15 years.

He said the human resources of the region remained under-utilised because of inherent defects in the educational system.

He suggested that the NEC play an effective role in changing the present scenario through fresh ideas and reorganisation.

The vice-chancellor said the slow pace of development could mainly be attributed to the neglect of education and the primary sector of the economy.

Deka suggested that an evolving and effective mechanism of monitoring and implementation of plans be developed. Making those involved in execution of projects accountable to society could be another step in this direction.

He cited some sectors, including horticulture, sericulture, floriculture, food processing, handicraft, cane and bamboo, herbal plants and tourism where the NEC could play a major role for the optimum exploitation of locally-available resources.

T.P. Khound, adviser, NEC, attended the workshop as the chief guest. He said the restructured NEC had come forward with a new outlook to play a catalytic role in bringing about a rapid change in the quality of life of the people of the region.

Referring to the document, Khound quoted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as saying that it would be a people?s plan in the real sense of the term.

Khound said the NEC was waiting for better opportunities under the Look East policy of the Centre.

The workshop was designed to deliberate on five important aspects of the economy, which could constitute a policy for the sustainable development of the region.

Celebrations

Sanskriti, the Gurukul, recently celebrated Grandparents’ Day on its premises. It was a moment of pride for the grandparents, who found their little ones performing.

The programme was a small attempt on the part of the school to help strengthen the relationship between children and their grandparents.

The programme began with the tiny tots of pre-junior classes singing the school song. This was followed by a rendition of the popular song Do re me. The children also performed a small skit titled Small creatures can teach big lessons.
