Guwahati, June 14: The Assam PCC today appealed to the people to vote for the party in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council election, promising "prompt action against the corrupt".

The election will be held on Saturday.

PCC senior spokesperson Apurba Bhattacharjya told reporters here that people should vote to protect their existence. "We appeal to the people to reject the BJP, which has accepted a corrupt person like Tuliram Ronghang and his associates," he said.

Before joining the BJP, Ronghang, the incumbent chief executive member of the council, was with the Congress. Ronghang is fighting the election on a BJP ticket.

"How can the BJP talk about making a corruption-free administration in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council with people like Ronghang? We challenge chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to launch an inquiry against him," Bhattacharjya said.

Taking a dig on finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was with the Congress before joining the BJP, Bhattacharjya said, "Some BJP leaders who had changed party are criticising us. They should ask the question themselves why they had to change party. Is it not to protect the wealth they had accumulated illegally?" he said.

"We promise the people of Karbi Anglong that if the Congress comes to power the party will inquire into all the irregularities that have taken place so far and will punish the guilty," he said.

Bhattacharjya also appealed to the district administration to help the residents of the 13 villages that have been affected by floods at Baithalangshu in the district.

"Besides, the administration should ensure that these villagers can cast their vote on Saturday without any problem," he said.
