Guwahati, Sept. 16: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today said its leader Akhil Gogoi was arrested because he had raised his voice repeatedly against the BJP-led Assam government.
The organisation alleged that the complaint on the basis of which Akhil was arrested on Wednesday from Golaghat for making provocative statements also included the name of pro-talks Ulfa leader Jiten Dutta but police only arrested Akhil and just sent a notice to Jiten.
'Akhil was arrested by a police team like it was a kidnapping incident. Had there been no witness, they may have killed him later. The complaint filed against him also mentioned the name of Jiten Dutta. But the police only arrested Akhil because he has continuously raised voice against the misdeeds of the BJP-led government,' KMSS president Bhasco De Saikia said.
On Jiten, Saikia said, 'We are not demanding his arrest. We will also carry out a protest if Jiten is arrested. But the incident shows that the case was lodged by Dibrugarh police against Akhil and he was arrested because of his strong stand against the BJP.'
The KMSS also criticised the suspension of sub-inspector Makandi Yadav and constables Ram Abesh Singh Yadav, Pranjit Sarma and Parama Lahon of Dibrugarh police station. The four policemen were suspended by the home department yesterday for allowing mediapersons to record footage in the police station when Akhil was taken there and he had alleged that the police tortured him in the name of arrest. 'The additional superintendent of police, assistant superintendent of police and officer-in-charge of Dibrugarh police station were also present at the time. But the home department only suspended four lower-level personnel,' Saikia alleged.
Akhil was arrested by Dibrugarh police on Wednesday from his residence in Golaghat after a public rally at Bamunbari in Dibrugarh district where he made provocative speeches according to the police.
The police said Akhil had allegedly said that he would take up arms if their demands were not fulfilled and that he was ready to use hangdangs (swords used by Ahom Kings) and AK-47s in the movement against the government.
Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia said, 'How can the threat of taking up arms be more serious than RSS members undergoing arms training? There seems to be different yardsticks for different people.'
Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi said it was unbecoming of director-general of police Mukesh Sahay to state that RRS arms training was not a violation of law. 'Such training creates tension, animosity and hatred between communities. If it is not an offence, what else would be?'
