Actor passes away

Veteran actor Badal Das, 88, died at a hospital here at 1.30pm on Saturday.

Guwahati: Veteran actor Badal Das, 88, died at a hospital here at 1.30pm on Saturday.

He was under treatment in the hospital for the past few days for cardiac ailment.

Das, a resident of Silpukhuri, is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

"He was a fun-loving man and tried to portray that through his characters. His last movie was Prabin Hazarika where he played a serious role," film critic Arun Lochan Das said.

Born in Tezpur, Das studied at Kamrup Academy, Cotton College and Gauhati University. He first performed as a child artiste in playwright Lakshyadhar Choudhury's Alibaba at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir in Uzan Bazar. Thereafter, he acted in more than 200 plays.

Das entered the realm of cinema through Badan Borphukan.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, "Assam will recall with respect Badal Das's contribution to the world of drama. His death is an irreparable loss for us."

Artiste dies: Sailen Saikia, a Xattriya dance exponent, died in a hospital on Saturday.
