4th seed crowned king

Guwahati, Oct. 15: Fourth seed Arjun Tewari of Railways became the king of the chequered board in the Jugal Kishore Newatia Guwahati International Open Rating Chess Championship that concluded at Shilpgram today.

Tewari culled 8.5 points after settling for a draw with Utpal Baruah of Assam in the 10th round today.

Top seed International Master S. Satyapragyan Swayangsu of Indian Airlines outwitted Manipur’s Y. Dhanvir Singh in the 10th round to finish second with 8.5 points. Tewari moved ahead of Swayangsu with a better progressive score.

In the third board, second seed International Master Atanu Lahiri of Life Insurance Corporation settled for a draw with Bihar’s Vipul Subhasish and finished third with eight points. West Bengal’s Sajal Basak, who prevailed over Santanu B.P. Gohain of Assam in a 10th-round game, finished fourth with 7.5 points. Subhashish came fifth with seven points.

Former champion of The Telegraph Schools Chess Northeast, Rajib Dhar, tallied seven points to finish sixth.

Tewari pocketed Rs 35,000 while Swayangsu won Rs 20,000 and Lahiri Rs 10,000. There were cash prizes for the top 30 players, and for the best players in different categories.

Assam players L. Biren Singh and Kushal Bagadia were named the best unrated players and Chiraranjan Bhuyan the best Assam player. Biswajit Bharadwaj and Pradip Bhuyan were jointly declared the best Guwahati players and Sudeshna Sarma the best female player.

The best in the age groups included Natasha Dutta in under-9, Kaushik Doley in under-11, Krishnashish Gogoi in under-13 and Parikshit Upadhyaya in under-15.
