Guwahati, June 22: The fourth-generation (4G) telecommunication service is all set to make its debut in the Northeast this August.
Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecom unit of Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries, will start the trial run of its state-of-the-art 4G services in Guwahati from August and would cover the entire region by the end of this year.
“Our field trials will start in Guwahati from August and we are planning a commercial launch across the region by the end of this year,” a Reliance Jio Infocomm official told The Telegraph.
This will be the first time that high-speed 4G services, both wireless and wired, will be launched in the region, which promises to offer an all new electrifying Internet bro-wsing experience to custo-mers. The 4G is the latest broadband technology that transfers data at a much faster speed.
“With 4G, you can notice a visible difference while downloading files, video-chatting, playing multi-player games or while viewing HD videos online,” the official said.
The 4G Internet technology will provide download speeds from 100 megabits per second (Mbps) up to 1 gigabits per second (Gbps).
At this speed, a Bollywood film of 650 to 750MB sizes can be downloaded in a couple of minutes.
The existing 3G service provides Internet speed in the range of 5.8 mbps to 14.4 mbps.
“Laying of 4G optical fibre cables is nearing completion and installation of towers is also going on simultaneously. More than 150 engineers and thousands of other staff (including outsourced workers and those on contract) are currently working on this ambitious project in the region,” he said.
“The 4G is all set to change the lifestyle of the people. The way they play online games, watch YouTube or a live telecast or monitor their homes or offices on their mobile phone or iPad (though CCTV cameras and web cams),” he said.
Officials said they would be launching both wireless and wired line 4G services.
Wired or fixed broadband is a fixed place service requiring wired line connectivity up to the computer while wireless broadband is a wireless service which enables one to access Internet anywhere, in the house or while on the move with the help of 4G-specific data cards and dongles.
Reliance will also be launching 4G-enabled handheld devices and tablets to avail the service.
“The possibilities of 4G are mind-boggling. With the help of 4G, virtual classrooms can be made a reality with interactive boards and high-definition video conferencing to reach out to students in far-flung areas. Similarly, remote security surveillance monitoring, tele-medicine ventures and e-governance projects can also be made more efficient by using 4G technology,” he said.
About the pricing, he only said the plan is to make the service “very affordable”.
