
Silchar, June 6: The flood situation in Assam's Karimganj district remained grim with more than 180 villages still inundated despite weather conditions improving in the past 24 hours.
Executive engineer of Karimganj water resources division Achinta Roy told The Telegraph that the Longai was flowing 1.38 metres above danger level while the Kushiara was flowing 1.1m above the danger mark. The Singla was flowing 0.67m below danger level. There has been no rainfall in the past 24 hours, he said.
An Assam State Disaster Management Authority report said nearly 1 lakh people in 124 villages were affected in Patharkandi, Nilambazar and Sadar circles of Karimganj district. Relief material was distributed from 130 points in the affected villages.
In Cachar district's Borkhola constituency, many villages were inundated following an embankment breach at Raipur on Monday night. The worst affected villages include Kumarpara, Tikargram, Manikpur and Tilagram.
Around 4,500 people in 16 villages of Nowboicha and Subansiri circles in Lakhimpur district were reeling under floods despite the weather improving. Over 100 people were shifted to a relief camp in Nowboicha circle.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal today instructed Kaziranga National Park authorities and the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of Golaghat and Nagaon districts to ensure safety of the animals during monsoon.
Chairing a high-level meeting at Kohora range of the park, Sonowal reviewed the creation of highlands and asked the authorities to complete it on war-footing. He reviewed anti-poaching measures and asked the park management to supply food and medicines to the animals during floods. He advocated a synergistic approach between the park authorities, district administrations and villagers in the fringe areas to create a shield against poachers. He also took stock of the facilities provided to forest guards and other park employees.
Additional chief secretary M.G.V.K Bhanu today reviewed the renovation of a 9.5km Dibrugarh town protection drain from Paltan Bazar to Hatkota Konwar Gaon. The Rs 169-crore project has been funded by Asian Development Bank and work started on October 17, 2016.
Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Laya Madduri said Bhanu instructed the engineers and contractors to control the flooding problem and clean up the drains in town.
