He was admitted to Medica Superspecialty Hospital on July 2 with ECMO support. The ECMO machine provides cardiac and respiratory support to people whose organs cannot function normally. He was taken to Medica from another hospital.

“Banerjee was suffering from severe Covid acute respiratory distress symptoms. Later, he developed post-Covid complications and acute renal failure,” said an official of Medica.

Banerjee had performed in concerts along with some of the leading names of Indian classical music like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma.

Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty and several other eminent musicians visited the hospital after Banerjee’s death.
