One of the boys in the SUV that was involved in the fatal crash at the Syed Amir Ali Avenue-Gurusaday Dutt Road crossing in south Kolkata early on Monday is still in the ICU and in such shock that doctors could not operate on him on Tuesday.
The other teenaged boy, who was at the wheel of the Volkswagen Taigun, was taken out of the ICU and shifted to a cabin on Tuesday.
The girl who was sitting next to Jayantika Jhunjhunwala, the first-year commerce student at St Xavier’s College who died in the crash, was discharged from hospital on Monday, but is yet to recover from trauma, police said.
An official at Belle Vue Clinic, where the two teenaged boys are admitted, said the boy in the front passenger seat had suffered multiple rib dislocations on the left side and fractured his right arm. He will undergo operation after two days.
“He was to undergo surgery for the arm fracture on Tuesday. But the operation had to be postponed because of his mental condition. He will undergo surgery two days later,” said an official of the hospital.
Both boys, he said, are still in severe physical and mental trauma.
An officer at Lalbazar said the police had not yet been able to talk to any of the survivors because of their mental condition.
“We heard that one of the two boys, who has suffered multiple rib dislocations, is screaming in pain. Recording his statement at this stage is out of the question. The remaining two are also in deep trauma and are barely speaking. We will not disturb them at this stage,” the officer said.
Another officer said they had approached the Kolkata office of Volkswagen for help to retrieve data from the car.
“We will know the exact speed of the car before the crash, whether the driver had pressed the accelerator instead of the brake and whether there was any mechanical failure if we get help from the company,” the officer said.
