Doctors who are also divas draped their chic Kerala Kasavus with panache on a November Sunday in an event named ‘Swarna Sweta’. The 42 doctors belonging to the ‘Doctors and Sarees’ Group Kolkata, had come together for their second mega event at the just-debuted fine-dining South Indian restaurant Avartana, at ITC Royal Bengal. The ambience that felt, smelt and sounded South India, bore testimony to their love for that part of the country. It was also a proud celebration of the rich diversity of India.

Around the world, there are about 40,000 doctors who are also sari enthusiasts and who are part of the primary Doctors and Sarees community, which was founded in 2019. The DNS Kolkata chapter, which now has around 350 members, shares the national organisation’s goals of promoting the sari, particularly among GenNext, and providing support for sari weavers, craftsmen, and entrepreneurs.

The doctors wore kanakambaram flowers, which had been flown down from Bangalore, and gave off a pleasant natural aroma, in their hair.
The entrance was decorated with a giant yellow and orange marigold arrangement, and the tables were set with smaller versions of the same. After a brief rehearsal with choreographer Tanwi Poddar, the women danced to the upbeat Saami saami routine from the hit film Pushpa. Not to mention, the traditional South Indian nine-course meal prepared with the finest finesse, which was another highlight of the evening, along with the photo shoots for each guest and the magnificent group portrait on the grand staircase of ITC Royal Bengal.

“The bonhomie between the members of this group formed barely two months ago is heartening to see. Everyone is involved and relaxed during our events.
