Q: I completed BSc (chemistry) and a one-year diploma in sanitary inspection. Could you tell me the sectors where I could look for jobs?
P. Tirupati Rao
A: Based on your qualifications, you can join the safety department of any manufacturing organisation or work with facilities management consultants.
Q: I have a bachelors in education and am doing MSc in ecology and environment from Sikkim Manipal University through distance learning. I want to join an NGO working for animals. What are the career prospects and how should I apply?
Soma Das
A: If you love animals then working in an NGO which deals with animals would give you immense satisfaction. Since you have ecology and environment in your masters, that would also come in handy. Search the Internet and you would get the names of all the NGOs working in your region. Apply directly to them.
Q: I am 24 years old and doing a PG diploma in HR management. I have done BCom (finance) and hold a diploma in aviation, hospitality and travel and tourism as well as one in IT and FA. I have worked in the hotel industry and in a management college as a programme manager. Currently I am unemployed. What should I do now?
Sangita Biswas
A: With the plethora of qualifications you have, I wonder which area is of interest to you. That is very important for setting up a career direction.I would suggest you first decide on the field of your choice. Since you have experience in the hotel industry, you can choose that as a career. If you want to be in the education sector, which is an upcoming field, you can hone your skills there too.
Q: I am 21 years old and am doing bachelors in physiology from Calcutta University. I want to do a masters in marine science. Could you suggest a few colleges?
Sujit Dey
A: You can do a masters in marine science from Calcutta University or Behrampur University in Orissa.
Q: I am in business development and sales at the mid-management level of a reputed company. I am a graduate with 15 years of experience. I want to move to academics in three years from now. How should I prepare? I cannot leave my job.
Abhisek Banerji
A: Since you are handling sales and have 15 years experience, the most prudent way to move to academics is to become a part-time faculty in a management institute. This will give you the confidence and credential to shift to a full-time career in academics.
Q: I have failed to secure 50 per cent in BCom. I am doing MBA from a private institute. Is it the right thing to do?
Raj Adhikari
A: You should have asked this question to yourself before joining the course. The fact that you are asking at this juncture proves that you are not enjoying what you are doing. Before embarking on a career (post-MBA), do get an assessment done of your “interest”. You can look up the website www.myvector.co.in.
Q: I am a commerce graduate pursuing MBA from Ignou. What other courses can I do? What are the prospects of CWA and CA?
Biswadip Karmakar
A: You should set a career goal early on in life. You should not opt for a course just because others say it is good. You need to have a passion for the subject and the job. There are various types of MBA and each one has a value of its own. The full-time MBAs offer better options. Since you are a BCom graduate, you might opt for CWA, but I think it is too late for a CA.
Q: I am doing BTech in electronics and instrumentation, but I don’t have a good percentage in my Plus Two. Please suggest what can I do.
Sanjoy Das
A: You will have to live with it. Now that you are going to be a BTech, this final degree would matter more than your Plus Two marks. You would face the question in the interviews you attend, but that will not be the sole reason for elimination. You should have an answer ready for the reasons of not doing well and its better to tell the truth.
Q: I am a 28-year-old BCom graduate. I took the company secretaryship (CS) test but failed. I have done a course in Tally. Should I still pursue CS? What are the options if I cannot pass?
Bisweswar Santra
A: Since you have invested some time and effort in CS, you should see the conclusion. Your BCom degree coupled with exposure to Tally would help you secure simple accounting jobs in big and small organisations in case you fail. It would be better if you try the smaller companies or start-ups, which require these skills.
Q: I am a final year engineering (software) student. Should I pursue an MBA or an MCA?
Ritesh Kumar Singh
A: Logically, you should pursue an MCA. Please match your aptitude and aspirations with what an MBA degree / diploma would offer and then you can easily take a decision. If you think you are the type who would be able to manage people well, then you can choose an MBA over MCA.
