Ranchi, June 18: Chari Toppo (28) of Angada block is residing in a dense forest since past two years after she was displaced from her land.
To feed her children she is engaged in cattle rearing. She has to cross through difficult terrain to fetch water and wood to cook food.
Chari is not an isolated case. There are over 50,000 villagers from the block who have been displaced by the government in its bid to bring an industrial revolution.
The government has acquired their lands for setting up of an industry, but it is yet to formulate a policy on rehabilitation and resettlement.
Like Chari more than 50 villagers from Koel Karo, Mahuldih, Tontoposhi, Netarhat, Karra and Govindpur today aired their grievances with the hope they would be redressed during the concluding day of the workshop on ?Displacement: Problems and Solutions,? organised by Indian Social Action Forum, Jharkhand chapter, here.
Toppo further said: ?There are many parents who are finding it difficult to get their daughters married as most of the youths from their areas have migrated to cities in search of livelihood.?
Neelima Indwar, another displaced person from Koel Karo, said that the forest department has cordoned the area and the villagers are being asked to evacuate the place. ?More than 200 villagers have been displaced from our area. They have migrated to cities where they are working either as labourers or rickshaw-pullers. The worst sufferers are the women and young girls who are being exploited in the name of employment. Children also go uneducated as there is no school in forest area,? she rued.
?The government has been assuring us that after the industries, for which MoUs have been signed with different companies, come up, it will provide us with employment. But it has forgotten about our rehabilitation,? lamented Krishna Munda from Karra.
One of the speakers Raja Ram said the government should frame a rehabilitation policy first and a survey should be undertaken in the area to know the mind of the people-to-be-displaced.
