Jamshedpur: More classes, fewer holidays and focus on research activities were the main demands of university toppers who assembled at the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday.
This was the second time the chancellor of universities, governor Droupadi Murmu, met the toppers of all the six state varsities in Ranchi.
The meet was held to get the feedback of toppers for improving higher education. Around 150 toppers from undergraduate 2014-17 batch and postgraduate 2015-17 batch were present.
In her address, Murmu said toppers, who are a source of inspiration for others, can teach in their colleges for a year.
She said this would not only give them experience, but would help them contribute to their colleges and universities.
Murmu said although the government was trying to tide over the crisis of teachers by appointing guest faculty, postgraduate toppers could be rop-ed in for the purpose.
"If toppers show interest, they will receive a monthly honorarium of Rs 15,000 as compared to Rs 4,000 earlier," she said.
The toppers demanded better libraries and laboratories, more research activities by students and faculty members, regular classes without unnecessary holidays and regular debates and seminars on various subjects.
Toppers from Ranchi University, Vinoba Bhave University, Nilamber Pitamber University, Sido Kanhu Murmu University, Kolhan University and Birsa Agricultural University attended the meet.
Principal secretary to the governor, Nitin Madan Kulkarni, and vice chancellors of the all the universities were also present on the occasion.
