Top seed loses game in chess tourney

Aayush Agarwal (1526) beat top-seed Pracheta Agarwal to emerge as the sole leader after Round-5 of the 38th Open District Chess Championship being held at JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Wednesday.

Jamshedpur: Aayush Agarwal (1526) beat top-seed Pracheta Agarwal to emerge as the sole leader after Round-5 of the 38th Open District Chess Championship being held at JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Wednesday.

Fifth-seed Aayush tops the table with five points in his kitty. He had no problems in outwitting reigning champion Pracheta who has an elo rating of 1400.

Top seed in the men's section Anshul Nigam is closing in on the leader (Aayush) with 4.5 points under his belt. He posted a comfortable win over unseeded Apoorv Vivek.

Anshul currently holds the second spot alongwith eight contestants - defending men's champion Ajit Masih (1676), Kumar Utkarsh (1635), Lokesh Kumar (1434), Chandan Kumar Prasad (1395), Jagannath Pra-sad Sharma (1447) Debanjan Sasmal (1551), Bholanath Das (1417), Anurag Panigrahi (1205) - who also have 4.5 points each.

With 4 points, the third position is occupied by nine participants.

Meanwhile, Sanchit Mukh-erjee (1444), Vikash Kalindi (1278), Kumar Satish (1275), Shivam Gupta (1260), Kumar Sankalp (1225), Abhish Kumar (1186), Rishi Raj Ghosh ( (1181), Om Narayan Bhuyan (1178), Sayon Kundu (1124) Sahil Kumar Sah (1099) won their respective fifth round matches to enter the next round.

Masih, who is made some smart moves by using his experience, beat Rahul Kumar Kar ((1186) even as Utkarsh and Lo-kesh split points by playing a draw. The outing between Ch-andan and Jagannath also met the same fate. Debanjan outsmarted unseeded Archit Jai-swal while Bholanath prevailed over Abhradeep Banerjee. Anurag, on the other hand, beat Animesh Kumar Singh (1331).
