The state sports department is falling back on technology to fix human errors.
After four years of administrative apathy and lack of political will turned the multi-crore Jaipal Singh Munda Mega Sport Complex in Hotwar, Ranchi, into a concrete wasteland and haunt for lawbreakers despite presence of guards, surveillance cameras are likely to be installed to plug security gaps.
Swamped by complaints of damages being inflicted on the nine stadiums at the complex, which hosted the 34th National Games in February 2011, sports minister Amar Kumar Bauri visited Hotwar on Wednesday and asked his men to put up CCTV cameras on priority basis.
"I have instructed officials of my department to fast-track the surveillance project. The stadiums are suffering because of improper upkeep. For starters, we will bolster vigil. I have told officials to submit estimates soon," the minister told The Telegraph over phone after his morning inspection in Hotwar.
On how camera surveillance would help preserve the National Games legacy, Bauri said, "CCTV vigil will keep us informed on the goings-on at each stadium, both from security point of view and civic upkeep. I have also ordered entry passes at every gate to keep tabs on people entering the premises. This will help us prepare a database and weed out trouble-mongers."
During his hour-long inspection, the minister said he had found the Tikait Umrao Shooting Range in the worst condition.
Several times in the past, The Telegraph had highlighted the plight of the once world-class shooting range.
The run-down building is now layered with dust, littered with chipped off wood and is teeming with mangled live wires. Termites work overtime while guardians of the facility sleep.
After his maiden trip on Wednesday, Bauri conceded that the "shooting range is indeed in very bad shape".
He said: "Many other stadiums too need immediate attention. I have directed officials to submit a plan on repair and revamp. The shooting range is on priority list."
