Ranchi, Feb. 1: A day after violence marred the first semester examination of law students, a delegation of students of the Chhotanagpur Law College met Ranchi University authorities to deny their role in the ruckus.
Students said they had not assaulted the principal of Sanjay Gandhi Memorial College (SGMC) centre Pandra or used unfair means in the test. They have also decided to boycott the examination until the rustication order against four students was revoked and the controversial paper V reexamined. ?The charges are all false. We will boycott the examination at the new centre (Ranchi College) if the university does not relent. We might even go as far as immolate ourselves to prove our innocence,? said a student.
Sources said, university authorities have dashed a letter to the police, demanding security arrangements at the university headquarters and the Ranchi College when the examination resumes on February 6. After yesterday?s fracas, the university announced that each candidate would be marked zero for the paper. The students had reportedly gone on a rampage at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial College (SGMC) centre at Pandara, assaulting principal Bigal Mahto after he expelled two examinees for using unfair means.
The delegation of students called on pro vice-chancellor A.A. Khan and handed over a memorandum, which accused the college authorities of cooking up the story of the assault.
?The allegation that we cheated is baseless. Some of us had only asked for clarifications in the question paper, which had a few printing errors. But the principal Mahto lost his cool and began using foul language. When we protested, he started to break the furniture and threatened to tell the police and the vice-chancellor that the students beat him up on the campus. That is why we have come to state our case today,? a student said.
The committee, constituted to probe the violence, is yet to submit a report. University sources said members of the probe committee today visited the college to take stock of the damage caused yesterday. The committee is expected to submit the report by February 5.
