Ranchi, April 28: After the girls, it?s now the turn of the boys to get a few lessons on the basics of sex. Not on the sneak, but as part of an initiative taken by the Army School.
In the first phase of the awareness programme on the topic for students of Class IX and X held a few days back, girls were given lessons on the topic. And this Saturday, a group of experts from the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) will be talking to the boys too.
Vice-principal of the school R. S. Singh said the move has been initiated to bring awareness among the students as the students of this age are at a very sensitive stage of their lives.
?They are curious to know as to what sex is all about. At school-level if the students are given knowledge about the subject, then later in life they will not feel shy to talk about it. It?s important to teach them as the topic is hardly discussed in the house or among peer groups,? he said.
He also informed that CBSE has already issued a circular that awareness should be generated in schools regarding sex education. ?We are just trying to follow the directive and in case CBSE gives directions to implement it in the syllabus, we will go ahead with it,? he said.
He said separate sessions had been organised for the girls and boys. ?For girls a lady teacher was there and for boys there will be male teachers. After the counselling session for girls, the impact was quite good. The students have shown signs of opening up,? Singh said.
Which initially they were not quite open to, as some of the students admitted. Nikita (name changed) of Class IX admitted that initially they were hesitant to open up to each other. ?Initially, we were not open, but slowly as the session proceeded, we felt relaxed,? she said.
Keeping in mind the CBSE directive, many other schools in the city too have plans to start such sessions. ?We have decided to hold a session on sex education in the second week of May, after the exams get over,? said A.K. Mishra, principal of Vivekanand Vidya Mandir.
Director of DAV, Ranchi Zone, L.R Saini said they have also decided to start such sessions. ?Recently, school principals were called at Delhi Public School where they were given awareness regarding life skills. Principals would play vital role in handling the issue,? Saini added.
Some children were however not sure as to how parents would react.
?The school has taken an initiative to impart knowledge to the children but we fear they might take some wrong route. Our society is such that elders do not want to discuss such sensitive issues with the children. We are not against it but then we have to be more careful and keep track of the children,? admitted one of the parents.
