What is the main objective of your work?
As Santhali language experts, our main objective is to work for the enrichment of the Santhali language. To constantly enhance the language and the literature of the Santhals, and to create an increased interest among them about its richness, through various texts and newspapers.
At the same time, the local dialect is also kept in mind while developing the language. We are at present collecting material for preparing a dictionary, a series of folk tales, drama and short stories to make Santhali a total and comprehensive language.
What role is the Government playing in this context?
The government has always played a very supportive role in generating an
interest among the masses.
Since 2003, Santhali language has been given an official recognition, along with Maithili, Dogri, Bodo and 18 other languages that are already officially recognised. Many universities teach Santhali in their undergraduate courses, and today there are more than one crore people with a thorough knowledge of the language.
What are the main problems that you face in trying to spread awareness among the masses?
The basic problem that has crippled our functioning has been the lack of interest in the common people to come forward and learn the very rich Santhali language. All city-based colleges should include it in their curriculum.
What are the job opportunities for people with a thorough knowledge of the Santhali language?
The job opportunities are definitely growing for people with a good knowledge of the Santhali language. The government is looking towards recruiting more teachers to teach at the various undergraduate and post-graduate courses.
