Navratra came to an end with Ravan Dahan in Dhanbad on Wednesday.

Though effigies of the 10-headed demon king are burnt at several places across the district on Dussehra, the tallest Ravan of around 65 feet at Sindri — where the ritual started during the heydays of Fertiliser Corporation of India in 1955 and continues unaffected by the closure of the factory — was the main draw.

Celebrations started at Sindri at 3pm with a procession from Saharpura’s Shiva temple. Artists dressed as Lord Rama, Lakshman, Hanuman and Sugreev marched through the streets amid beating of drums and blowing of conch shells. The procession culminated at the temple and the main festivities began at 6am. More than 2,000 people had come to witness Ravan Dahan.

Jharia MLA Kunti Singh was present as chief guest.

“Such is the attraction of Ravan Dahan here that those working outside ensure that they are back home during Dussehra,” said Siddeshwar Mishra (65), a retired engineer of FCI.

At Bhuli block-B, a 40-feet effigy of the demon king was burnt amidst the presence of Bokaro MLA Samresh Singh.
