l Education hub: The land can also be utilised to set up an education hub. An Indian institute of management or an Indian institute of technology or a law university, for that matter, can each do with 100 to 250 acres of land. There could be a hotel management institute, a new medical college, a college of nursing, a fashion design institute or a branch of the National Institute of Design, an Indian institute of information technology, social research institutes or even a branch of the Indian Institute of Science. The land could come in handy for these institutes, hostels and houses for the faculty. One positive advantage of setting up these institutions will be the influx of scholars and teachers from outside. The influx of exciting and bright minds will surely have a bearing on shaping the future generation.
l Industry & economic zone: The government, however, appears committed to set up an industrial zone. Although the Tupudana Industrial Estate, next to the sprawling HEC complex, has virtually shut down, the state government appears intent on appropriating the vacant land for setting up ?industries?.
With approval for two SEZs (special economic zones) from the Centre and one of them being set up in Jamshedpur, it is not clear if another is needed or viable. Nor is the government quite transparent when it acknowledges the interest shown by Usha Martin and Jindal Steel in ?buying? the vacant land on the HEC campus. Some sources claim the two companies are interested only in 50 or 100 acres of land ?at concessional rates? so they set up their corporate offices; others believe the offer to be for setting up industrial units.
