Jamshedpur, May 23: Sixth seed local lad Prosonjit Paul made it to the second round of the Boys? Singles under-16 category of Tata Steel-AITA Talent Series Tennis Championship today.
Prosonjit defeated qualifier Ashray Bhasin of Bengal 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets in the championship, being organised jointly by Tata Steel at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, United Club and Beldih Club.
Another local player, Vikash Jha, made waves by ousting third seed Neil D?Souza of Bengal by 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets.
Jha selected some crafty shots and played a power-packed match to secure himself a place in the quarterfinals.
Assam?s Manab Kumar Chakma blanked out the eighth seed, Abhilash Keshav, from Delhi in straight sets by 6-0, 6-0.
In another match, Sanjib Regius Kerketta from Kolkata created another upset by trouncing the seventh seed, Chinmay Pradhan, from Orissa.
In a match that went the full distance, Sanjib prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4.
In the Boys? Singles under-12 category, unseeded Shukrit Guha of Bengal ousted the seventh seed state-mate, Anubhav Tirath Lal, from his home state by 6-0, 6-4.
Jamshedpur?s Saket Mishra lost to fifth seed Avik D'Souza of Bengal but not before making Avik sweat.
The first set was stretched to tie breaker, which Saket lost at 7-4. In the second set, Avik got his act together and raced to 6-1.
However, Saket made up for his second round loss by reaching the quarterfinals of the Boys? Doubles under 12 event.
He paired up with Mohammad Sharyar Salim to easily beat Prithvihaas Volipalli of Andhra and Aavirash Mitra of Bengal 6-1, 6-1.
In the Girls? Singles under-12 semi-finals, top seed Amrita Mukherjee of Bengal defeated Angana Mukherjee of her own state by 6-0, 6-1.
The scoreline does not reveal the excellent game played by Angana who matched her much experienced opponent shot for shot.
In the second semi-final, Ritwika Mullick of West Bengal went on to defeat the second seed Pratibha Goyal 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 also from the same state.
The Girls? Singles under-12 finals between Amrita Mukherjee and Ritwika Mullick will be played tomorrow at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.
