Not hostels these - All 7 boys' accommodations at RIMS are guilty of ignoring basic living standards

The hub of a nasty row over violence and encroachment, the condition of hostels at RIMS, Ranchi, is more nauseating than words can ever express. If the rulebook is followed, the seven for boys do not even pass muster as hostels in the first place. Every student accommodation in RMC area is required to fulfil 13 eligibility criteria. The boys’ hostels do not meet nine!

While civic bosses sound unsure on whether they have the right to inspect amenities on RIMS premises, the medical cradle functions under Ranchi University and the same rules must technically apply to it as they do to other constituent colleges.

RMC RULES VERSUS RIMS

Cobwebs render water purifiers defunct at hostel No. 4

Uninterrupted power: Never heard of at RIMS hostels. Dark nights come uninvited in the absence of power back-up and battery-operated lights are a part of every student survival kit

Pure drinking water: Yay! All seven hostels have water purifiers. Only one problem, all are cobwebbed and defunct. Students buy potable water on a regular basis

Cooking space with exhaust fan: Hello, someone there?

We are lost. Where is the kitchen? Aargh! Don’t tell us this is it. When was it last cleaned? The shocker continues when boarders say potable water is not available for cooking and meals are rustled up in candlelight with creepy-crawlies all over the sooty walls

Solid waste management: Now, now, what is that? Every hostel has a “helper” who collects daily garbage and dumps it outside the premises. Sewers around RIMS are vintage

Separate toilets for men and women: Aha! RIMS scores. Girls and boys have separate hostels; hence, separate toilets. But, there’s a catch. When toilets choke, students have to call and pay for plumbing. Leaky roofs and pipes are salient features

Firefighting gear: What?

Surveillance cameras: You must be joking!

Security guards: No hostel ever had one. Phones, laptops and other valuables are up for grabs with guard grilles broken too

Wide entry and exit: Phew! Yes.

Signboard: Each hostel has a signboard

Name and address of hostel owner: NA

Parking facility: Yes

Provisions to handle emergency: the February 4 incident when seniors battered juniors with rods says it all, doesn’t it

You have seen it mostly. But, there is more. The rooftop water tanks must be layered with filth. They have never been cleaned. Water taps often pour insects

AUTHORITYSPEAK

We have called PWD officials. All the basic needs will be addressed. Only habitable rooms will be allotted to students. Rest will remain locked. RIMS will have a common boundary wall. Come back after sometime and see the changes

Dr S.K. Choudhary
Acting director, RIMS

It is a complex question (whether the RMC can haul up RIMS). I am not aware if we can inspect facilities at RIMS hostels. However, accommodations at a premier institute should follow our 13 guidelines

Deputy administrator, RMC
