Jamshedpur, May 25: Singur is where all the Nano action is. But Jamshedpur, home to Tata Steel, is doing its best to leave an imprint in the production of the Rs 1lakh dream car.

The Tubes Division of Tata Steel, a leading entity in the country in manufacturing high precision tubes, will now be making the steel and fibre tubes that would be used in the Nano’s engine cradle.

According to high-level company sources, the tubes would be manufactured at the company’s Precision Tube Mills, which has been renovated to incorporate additional equipment required for the large order.

After a successful round of testing, the company made a presentation on its manufacturing process on April 1 to Tata Steel chief operating officer H.M. Nerurkar and Tata Workers’ Union (TWU) chief Raghunath Pandey.

The duo were visiting the facility during a function to mark the beginning of the new financial year.

Executive-in-charge (tubes) Vivek Kamra confirmed that his company had successfully tested the product for the Nano but refused to elaborate.

“At this point we do not want to discuss the project,” he said.

But a Tata Motors authorised dealer based in Pune reasoned that it would make economic sense for the Tatas to opt for their own company in Jamshedpur as transporting the precision tubes to the Nano’s manufacturing hub in Singur (in Bengal’s Hooghly district) would then be that much more simpler.

Expected to be up for sale during Durga Puja in October, bookings for the Nano are expected to start in July.

Guided by initial market surveys, Tata Motors has set a target of producing 3 lakh cars by the end of the fiscal.
