The placement scene at Marwari College, Ranchi, looks promising this year.

The college has been able to place around 170 students so far with better pay. If all goes fine, the figure will touch 500 by this year-end.

A host of companies like TCS, both its IT and Business Process Service wings, TCS Ignite, e-Gyan Sagar, HCL, Capgemini and IBM Concentrix, among others, have already visited the autonomous constituent unit of Ranchi University (RU) between June and September to pick up graduates and final-year undergraduate students from BCA, BSc, biotechnology, BA and zoology, besides MBA.

Digital wallet and e-commerce giant Paytm came calling on Thursday for a two-day recruitment drive.

More recruiters like Piramal Foundation, Wipro, BioCorn Products, HCL and IBM Concentrix (second round) are slated to come in November and December. The placement drive will take a break in October, as the college will be closed for Puja vacation.

"The recruitment drive started in June with around 1,800-2,000 graduates and undergraduates appearing for interviews. Till now, we have been able to place 172 students. By December, at least over 500 will get jobs. Last year, around 60 students were placed. The students are being hired as trainees and will be confirmed after a year," informed placement coordinator of Marwari College Shishir Kumar.

While IBM Concentrix has creamed off the lion's share of 69 job-seekers, TCS (IT Services) absorbed 60. TCS (Business Process Service) and TCS Ignite picked up 18 each, e-Gyan Sagar hired five students and Capgemini 2.

Thirteen students have cleared SAP's online test, but there are some hitches with the interview. Hence, result is awaited. "The pay is also better. Last year, the salary offered ranged between Rs 80,000 and Rs 1.86 lakh per annum. This year, the highest salary of Rs 3.5 lakh per annum is being given by e-Gyan Sagar. TCS has offered Rs 2 lakh per annum," Shishir added.

So, what worked this time?

"Our students are improving their communication skills after registering online with IIT-Mumbai. They are downloading software and practising it. Also, former students are conducting sessions to improve skills of students in keeping with the requirements of each company," said another placement coordinator Anubhav Chakraborty.
