Traffic bottlenecks triggered by unauthorised and haphazard parking are likely to end in Mango, the gateway to Jamshedpur from NH-33, by August.

The Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC), which offers urban amenities to a population of nearly 3 lakh, has decided to set up dedicated parking bays for the first time on arteries under its jurisdiction.

"The decision was taken following complaints of traffic snarls on three important arteries - Dimna Road, Old Purulia Road and New Purulia Road. As of now, traffic police cannot prosecute parking rogues because there are no dedicated parking lots. So, we want to set up nine parking bays along these three arteries," said MNAC special officer Sanjay Kumar Pandey.

Pandey maintained that they had already identified three spots near Big Bazaar (along NH-33), Payal Talkies and MNAC office (both along New Purulia Road).

"We plan to identify six more parking bay sites along Dimna Road and Old Purulia Road. The sites will be finalised this month (July) and auctioned to private bidders for maintenance and levying of parking charge, as per the Jharkhand Municipal Act, 2014, from August. It will not only add to state revenue, but also give teeth to traffic police," the official added.

Under the Act, parking charges in the commercial hubs of Sakchi and Bistupur are Rs 5 for two-wheelers, Rs 10 for three-wheelers and Rs 20 for four-wheelers.

The four-lane Dimna Road, which stretches for 3.5km, is the entry point to the steel city from NH-33 and witnesses a steady flow of heavy vehicles. The road hosts several business establishments and apartments. Nearly 50,000 vehicles cross the stretch daily and peak-hour snarls, especially near Mango roundabout where illegal parking is rampant, are a nightmare.

The four-lane New Purulia Road, which links Mango with densely populated areas such as Azadnagar and Jawaharnagar, and hosts popular addresses like Payal Talkies, the state forest guesthouse and Mango police station, witnesses unauthorised parking every day.

Congestion woes are similar on Old Purulia Road, which links Mango to Kapali in neighbouring Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

Tushar Ghosh, a retired government employee and resident of Moon City on Dimna Road, welcomed the project. "We have been wanting dedicated parking areas. Road discipline is a must," he said.
