Do you know how to stop a bleeding wound till help arrives or resuscitate a person who has just passed out cold?
If the answer is yes, you can save precious moments in cases of emergency.
Students of Sakchi-based Dayanand Public School learnt safety tips on Friday, thanks to the Jamshedpur chapter of St John Ambulance Brigade — an organisation that provides first-aid training — at the start of a two–day awareness programme.
The event, in which three resource persons from the brigade demonstrate various medical techniques to save lives until paramedics take over, is being held as part of the cradle’s safety week celebrations. More than 50 students of the school, all members of Safe Club, took part in the first-aid training on Day One.
“Knowing what to do in case of an emergency is always an advantage. The event is being organised to enable students to pick up basic tips on things to do in case of an emergency. Once the batch of 50 is trained, they will pass on their knowledge to other students,” said Swarna Mishra, principal of Dayanand Public School.
On the events on the first day, the principal said the students learnt the basic principles of first aid and how to respond to bleeding, fracture, bandaging, burns, snakebite, dog bite or general wounds.
The students were also taught methods of artificial respiration, including Schafer’s method, mouth-to-mouth insufflation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in detail.
“We are providing theoretical as well as practical knowledge to the students so as to help them understand what to do during emergencies and the ways in which a life can be saved,” said P.K. Chatterjee, a resource person who took part in the day’s events.
He said the students would be taught some other basic life saving techniques on Saturday after which they would have to take a written test. If they manage to qualify, the brigade would hand them certificates.
The school has also lined up several other activities from Saturday to celebrate Safety Week. There will be a fire and road safety programme on Monday after which the students of Safe Club will also impart safety tips to nearby institutes, including Bharatiya Model Middle School.
A campaign against polythene bags will also be launched to spread green awareness among students and residents. Besides, a safe rally will also be organised on September 13.
