Jamshedpur, June 11: A rogue Romeo in black robes was arrested today for allegedly sexually exploiting a college student after promising to marry her.
Practising lawyer Arvind Kumar Singh was arrested this morning on the basis of a complaint filed by the girl, who alleged that the man had dumped her after currying sexual favours on the pretext that he would marry her.
Police have booked the lawyer, a resident of Circuit House Area in Sonari, after registering a case of rape against him.
The girl, hailing from a well-to-do family, had come to the city from Chaibasa for her degree course in Jamshedpur Women’s College. She was staying with an acquaintance in Sonari.
She met Singh through a common friend and gradually, the two grew close.
The lawyer promised to marry her and the two developed a physical relationship.
But, the girl says in her complaint lodged with the police, that soon after, the man started avoiding her.
This prompted the girl to lodge a First Information Report against Singh.
Police said that on the basis of the FIR and preliminary investigation, they arrested the lawyer and forwarded him to judicial custody.
The lawyer, police said, had earlier married two girls and abandoned them after exploiting them and then trapped this young girl.
The police forwarded the lawyer to judicial custody in handcuffs and with a rope tied to his waist.
The moment Singh was produced before the chief judicial magistrate, a section of lawyers took it as an insult to their fraternity and began protesting. The CJM immediately ordered the police to set him free from the handcuff and the rope.
Forester assault
A forester posted in Dalma division attacked the adjacent house of a ranger in Mango around 2 am today.
The attackers, whose motive is yet unclear, then allegedly kidnapped the ranger’s domestic help after thrashing him severely.
The domestic help was released about 14 hours after he was allegedly kidnapped.
The ranger, R.P. Singh, has lodged an FIR against the forester (territorial) Dig Vijay Singh and nine others at the Mango police station.
Deputy superintendent of police (headquarters-1) M.P. Lakra and senior forest officials visited the ranger’s house this morning. A policeman has been posted there for security.
R.P. Singh said he and his family members woke up hearing shouts from outside.
“I saw the forester and his men shouting outside my door. I saw the men enter my premises and pick up my domestic help Sachida, who was sleeping under a shed outside. They thrashed him severely.”
The ranger said the forester wanted him to react on hearing the screams of the domestic help but he refrained.
He stated that after a thorough beating the accused took Sachida along at night and released the servant in the afternoon.
