Films harp on social concerns, eco hazards

Ranchi, Dec. 8: Electronic waste, monkey menace, and animal killings were some of the themes of the short films screened during the second day of CMS Vatavaran 2006, environment and wildlife film festival at Gossner Theological College here.

Kanha — Protecting A Paradise, a film by Sekar Dattatri, set in the Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh was screened today.

Dattatri, who received the Rolex Award and had been on jury of Wild Screen Film Festival (UK), got a good response, especially for the visuals in his 18-minute film.

Nutan Manmohan’s 26-minute film — A Second Hand Life — was on e-waste while Syed Fayaz in A Brush With Death showed how traders kill a mongoose for selling fur to paintbrush industries. The postscript of the film said it inspired the government to take steps against this practice.

Not long ago, Delhi faced a monkey menace, which was well picturised by Ajay and Vijay Bedi, who got the Panda Award in the newcomers’ category of the Wild Screen Film Festival (UK) in 2004.

Other films screened were Development Flows From Barrel Of The Gun by Megnath and Biju Toppo and Unearthed Hell by Sudhir Pal.

Saturday’s important films: The last flight by Nutan Manmohan,Chasing butterflies by Gurmeet Sapal and Rhino: The Indian Unicorn by Bedi films.
