Ranchi, March 16: Global warming has entered the fashion domain, and that too with apparels created by city-born designer Anju Modi.

This evening, models walked the ramp at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2008 in Delhi wearing suits designed by Modi.

Modi’s collection, “Luminosity”, based on global warming focuses on “sheer, fluid fabrics, in pure natural colours which are peaceful, free and illuminated”.

Modi, based in Delhi since her marriage in the ’70s, told The Telegraph that her collection is a reflection of species which would undergo change because of global warming. “I have tried to show the evolution of man by designing dresses in colours like light green, beige, wine and black,” said Modi.

Originally from Upper Bazaar, Modi is the daughter of late Atmaram Modi, a city businessman. She completed her schooling from Loreto Convent and graduation in psychology honours from Ranchi Women’s College.

At present, she runs boutiques in Delhi — Square 1 at Saket and Crescent at Qutab International. Her clients include Shabana Azmi among others and her designer clothes also received appreciation from models like Sheetal Mallar, Madhu Sapre, Neha Dhupia among others. “I have my own label Anju Modi. I have developed new branded fabric in Varanasi and revived the work of zari. Besides, the tie-and-dye craft has also been used by giving geometric pattern while kota fabrics is used for jackets and blouses,” added the fifty-something lady.

“I have also revived silver and gold foil print technique from the 12th century in Rajasthan villages in a contemporary way. Ankur and Priyanka started their label AMPM in 2002. Their style speaks of soft grace, and confidence,” said Modi.

While talking about her town of birth, Modi said that the picturesque beauty still lingers in her mind.

“In my school and college days, we used to visit the waterfalls and Ranchi Hill frequently .”

Besides, Modi said that she was always into painting, mainly of natural surroundings. “The hobby was later used in my designing. In 1990, I started Anju Modi and went through high and low of life but I always remain an independent person,” she said.

She regularly visits Ranchi. “How can I forget my hometown? I still remember the Firayalal Chowk and Hundru falls. For designing, I mainly use handloom fabrics and khadi. I am also supplying my designer clothes to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Bangalore and Chennai which cater to upper middle class families.”
