Jamshedpur, May 5: Don’t be surprised if you are walking down the street and a stranger makes your wrist watch vanish into thin air or a 100-rupee note is fished out from inside a coconut.

Zapped? Relax, you have time till September to prepare yourself for such bizarre happenings.

Around 250 magicians from all over the country will descend on the steel city in September to participate in a magic contest and seminar organised by the Jharkhand Magic Association (JMA). The event is being organised to commemorate the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna JRD Tata.

“The event is a tribute to one of the most extraordinary personalities of the country. We will soon form a committee for the efficient conduct of the competition and the seminar,” said JMA secretary Chanchal Chakraborty.

The event will be held at the Milanee Hall in Bistupur from September 15 to 17.

Chakraborty added that renowned magicians P.C. Sorcar (young) and O.P. Sharma have agreed to attend the event. “Invitations to others, including a famous magician from Bangladesh, is also being sent,” Chakraborty said.

He said the seminar and the competition would be held over three days.

This is the third time that the JMA is organising a magic competition. Similar events were earlier held in 1992 and 2000.

“Magic shows are losing popularity in the country and we are holding the seminar to discuss the possibilities of resurrecting the magic of magic in the state,” Chakraborty said.

According to JMA officials, the magicians would be put up at the eastern wing of the JRD Tata Sports Complex. “It is a big event and we are looking forward to conduct it in a most efficient manner,” they added.

They said the event would also lend an opportunity to local magicians, who seldom get a platform to display their talent.

“We would be inviting all the magicians from Jharkhand to participate in the event. They could learn some new tricks from their renowned counterparts,” the officials added.

“It has been over four years since the city has played host to renowned magicians of the country, who have also performed in several countries abroad,” they said.

Chakraborty, who is also the head of the education department of Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company Limited (Jusco), said an inter-school exhibition on the life of JRD Tata would also be organised at the Scouts and Guides Centre in Kadma on June 29.
