Ranchi, Aug. 23: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to felicitate schools that have properly implemented its child-friendly Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation.

CBSE will honour selected schools among the 11,044 affiliated schools across India, including over 100 schools from Jharkhand. Among them are 40 CBSE schools in Ranchi alone. Schools selected for the honour will reflect a high standard of implementation of the flexible and graded evaluation system, which seeks to minimise fear and stress connected to exams.

The screening process is still on. Results will be out in another two months.

In 2009, the board had implemented the evaluation system for Classes I to IX to reduce pressure on students by replacing marks with grades. Students’ evaluation is based on work experience and extra-curricular skills.

Factors taken into account to judge the schools include their awareness of the evaluation system and its implementation, record-keeping, usage of teaching aids, advocacy programmes for parents to include them as stakeholders in the evaluation system, training for teachers, devising formats of the record card and lesson planning.

According to board officials, the award will include a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 21,000 for the school. The school principal will get a separate mentor award of a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 10,000.

Principal of Delhi Public School J. Mohanty said if they received the award it would be an “overall recognition” for the cradle. The child-friendly evaluation system was implemented in the school in 2009 for Class IX but gradually, the school brought lower classes under the system as well.

“Staff, students and parents have all been made aware of the new system as the evaluation process is quite a departure from the conventional format,” added the principal.

The principal of Surendranath Centenary School, Samita Sinha, said CBSE wanted the implementation of the new evaluation system in letter and in spirit. Hence, schools are being actively encouraged for its effective implementation. “For instance, our students are involved in dramatics and kavi sammelans, and they are also taken on field trips to museums. We encourage children to develop leadership skills,” she said.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to institute awards to those schools, which encourage the implementation of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE).

The board had implemented the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system implemented from class I to IX in 2009.

The factors which will be taken into consideration for awarding the schools would include- awareness of the evaluation system, its implementation, record keeping, teaching aids used, advocacy programme for parents, training for teachers, format of record card and lesson planning.

The CBSE has instituted awards for 11, 044 CBSE schools across the country which also includes schools of Jharkhand. There are 40 CBSE schools in the state Capital.

As per the CBSE officials the CCE award will include certificate and cash prize of Rs 21, 000 while the mentor prize will be bagged by the school principal which includes certificates and cash prize of Rs 10, 000.

Principal of Delhi Public School (DPS), J. Mohanty said that if they get the award it would be an overall recognition for the school.

However, Mohanty clarified that they are not working to get the award as the school is making all required effort for effective implementation of CCE.

Mohanty added that though CCE was implemented in 2009 for class IX but now the school has effectively following the CCE evaluation system in lower classes too.

“We are conducting meeting with the school staffs and making them aware about the CCE, as its evaluation is quite different. It is mostly based on the interview, quiz and practical based teaching,” Mohanty pointed out.

Besides Mohanty said that in order to make the CCE effective, he had also roped in parents who were invited to make them aware about CCE system. The students were also made aware of the CCE on Saturday last,” the principal said. The principal of Surendranath Centenary School Samita Sinha said that the CBSE wants the implementation of CCE in letter and spirit. Hence schools are being encouraged for its effective implementation,” Sinha pointed out.

As far as her school is concerned, she said that today the students were taken for the field visit. “They went to museum and are also actively involved in dramatics and kavi sammelan so that more and more students are encouraged to develop leadership qualities,” the principal said.
