Ranchi, June 23: St Xavier’s College has hit boom time with its three postgraduate courses launched this academic year.
Students are making a beeline to the autonomous college to buy forms for its three-year course in master in computer application (MCA), and two-year postgraduate courses in arts and commerce. This is the capital’s only cradle, besides Ranchi University, to offer postgraduate courses in these three streams.
Since yesterday, already 350 forms of the new courses have been sold. The modest fee, especially in MCA, compared to BIT-Mesra for instance, coupled with the lure of the Xavier’s tag, is proving to be a top draw. Compared to BIT-Mesra and others, where MCA fee per semester is pegged at Rs 50,000-plus, at St Xavier’s College, it is Rs 35,000.
“In many universities, the fee for computer application and information technology courses is steep. If I take up MCA in St Xavier’s, it will be easier on my family,” said aspirant Nitin Kumar. “Moreover, since it is St Xavier’s, faculty is top-notch,” added Manisha Sinha, waiting for a form.
The cradle offers 50 seats in MCA, and 35 each in MA and MCom. The pocket pinch per semester in the last two is Rs 10, 000. Classes will start in August.
Placement co-ordinator and admission in-charge of the cradle Swarat Choudhary said: “As demand for new courses is high, we will take entrance exams in the second week of July. We do not wish to compromise on the quality of students we admit.”
Choudhary added though the college boasted a good faculty for all the new courses, they would also rope in guest faculty from institutes such as IIM, XISS and Central University of Jharkhand.
Meanwhile, the college has published the first list for admission in intermediate science, arts and commerce. The last day to give forms for undergraduate courses was June 15. Entrance tests for admission are going on and will conclude tomorrow. First lists of some streams have been put up already.
