Teacher's slap kills child

• BALLIA (UP): An 11-year-old girl died on Wednesday allegedly after being slapped by a teacher of a private school here two days earlier, police said. An FIR was registered against Rajni Upadhyay on charges of culpable homicide and voluntarily causing hurt, superintendent of police Anil Kumar said. Relatives alleged the Class V pupil fainted when the teacher slapped her. PTI

Delhi schools

• NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has ordered private schools functioning without its recognition to discontinue all educational activities from the next academic session. The government advised residents of Delhi to get their wards admitted only in those schools which are run as well as recognised by either the directorate of education or any other local authorities. Eight killed

• ALIRAJPUR (MP): Eight labourers were killed and as many injured when a sand-laden truck overturned in the district on Wednesday morning, police said. Sixteen labourers were sitting in the truck when it turned turtle after one of its wheels got stuck in a ditch. PTI

Hitman killed

• MEERUT: A sharpshooter, carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, was killed in an encounter near Rohana in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district, the police said on Wednesday. Vikas Jat was killed in the encounter on Tuesday evening. PTI

More leopards

• MUMBAI: The number of leopards in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai has increased to 41, up from 35 in 2015, a report submitted to the forest department said. PTI

Stage death

• KOLLAM (KERALA): Noted Kathakali exponent and Padma Bhushan recipient Madavoor Vasudevan Nair passed away during a stage performance here. The 88-year-old artist was performing Ravana at a temple around 10.40pm on Tuesday when he collapsed on stage. Last month, an ottamthullal exponent had died during a performance. PTI

Poor air quality in Mumbai

• MUMBAI: The residents of Mumbai woke up to a hazy sky on Wednesday and monitoring stations across the metropolis recorded poor to moderate air quality, an IMD official said. The suspension of dust particles in the air over the city and its suburbs, the heavy traffic on roads and construction work at several places were responsible for the poor air quality and the haze, the India Meteorological Department's deputy director-general (western region), K.S. Hosalikar, said. PTI

• LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government is set to introduce a bill giving ancestral property rights to maiden grand-daughters who have lost their father. The Revenue Code (Amendment) Bill will be tabled in the budget session of the Uttar Pradesh legislature, commencing on Thursday. PTI

Gold haul

• RAMESWARAM: Gold biscuits weighing about 10kg and worth Rs 2 crore meant to be smuggled into India were seized from a boat by the Sri Lankan Navy in their territorial waters, police said. Two persons on the boat were arrested and taken to Kangesanthurai port in Sr Lanka, they said. PTI

• THANE: A Thane court has awarded three years' rigorous imprisonment to a 35-year-old man for molesting a toddler living in his neighbourhood. According to the prosecution, Vinit Nandkumar Dhanawade molested the girl when she went to his house on February 26, 2016. The accused threatened to beat her up if she revealed the incident to anyone. But the girl informed her mother. Her parents lodged a complaint on February 29 and the accused was arrested. PTI

• NEW DELHI: A special court here has sent Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, to 14 days' judicial custody in connection with a case related to INX Media. PTI

Shop owner killed

• THANE: A laundry shop owner was allegedly stabbed to death by three persons in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday night, police said. Manoj Kanojia, 35, was going home after closing his shop when the the trio attacked him. The motive behind the killing is not yet known. PTI
