Guwahati, Dec. 23: Asam Sahitya Sabha general secretary Paramananda Rajbongshi today said he would resign from his post in the executive meeting to be held on December 29.
Various branches and district committees of the Sabha have been demanding Rajbongshi's resignation since the controversy began regarding extension of the term of its executive body by a year.
Besides, Rajbongshi's name has got involved in the suicide case of a former accountant, Rajendra Nath Dutta, and he is also entangled in a legal battle in family matters.
Gauhati High Court yesterday granted anticipatory bail to Rajbongshi till January 3 in connection with the suicide case and directed police to produce the case diary.
The Sabha's branch and district committees said the controversies have tainted the Sabha's name ahead of its centenary celebrations, to be held in February next year in Upper Assam's Sivasagar district.
After the controversies, the reception committee formed to celebrate the Sabha's centenary decided not to allow Rajbongshi to take part in any activity.
In a statement released to the media this evening, Rajbongshi said he had taken the decision (to resign) to facilitate smooth celebration of the Sabha's centenary.
He requested people to avoid all controversies regarding the Sabha and focus on the celebrations.
Rajbongshi has so far served as Sabha general secretary twice and once as its vice-president.
The term of the executive body will end on March 31, 2017.
Welcoming Rajbongshi's offer to resign, Sabha president Dhruba Jyoti Borah said the terms of all committees will end on March 31. He requested the committees to prepare to elect new representatives.
Borah, Rajbongshi and a few Sabha officials met here this evening to discuss the crisis.
On Tuesday, Borah had invited former presidents for a meeting in Guwahati to discuss how to tide over the crisis but none of them turned up.
