Bhopal, Sept. 26: A right to information activist who had "exposed" corruption in panchayats was found dead with stab injuries all over his body in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district today.

Police said the body of Mukesh Dubey, 42, was found in an agricultural field in Matkaura village. He had several stabbing marks all over his body, Morena superintendent of police Adityanath Singh said.

Singh said Dubey was a resident of Morena town and had exposed corruption in panchayats over utilisation of funds for development projects.

According to the police superintendent, there were some cases of assault against the RTI activist.

"We have registered a case of murder. We are investigating if Dubey's death had anything to do with his RTI activism or it was a case of personal animosity," Singh said.

The initial investigation suggests that Dubey could have been murdered somewhere else and his body dumped in the field because there were no bloodstains there.

RTI activists in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh have often alleged apathetic attitude of the state government and constant threats from vested interests. Notable RTI activists in Madhya Pradesh such as Ajay Dubey and Anand Rai receive threats frequently.

In 2011, rights activist Shahla Masood 38, was murdered in broad daylight outside her Bhopal home when she was on her way to participate in the India Against Corruption campaign launched by Anna Hazare.
