New Delhi, May 13 :
Six major women?s organisations have accused the Faridabad Delhi Public School principal of sexually harassing women employees and raised questions about the safety and security of the teenage girls studying in the institution.
They have also charged Delhi Public Schools (DPS) society president and Congress leader Salman Khurshid with not initiating any action against the culprit. The DPS society runs about 65 schools in the country.
The Faridabad DPS principal could not be contacted. An office-bearer of the school society, who carried out an investigation on the basis of complaints filed by several woman teachers, said there was a case for a detailed probe into the charges and the school had set up an internal committee. But, she added, the panel may not be accepted in a court of law as no outsider has been included in it.
At a press conference here, the organisations produced three former staffers of the school, alleged victims of the 63-year-old principal. They described how the man had the ?pervert? tendency to ?touch? and ?hug? his women colleagues under any pretext. All three had to leave at different times because they ?could not take it anymore?.
As the three (their names are not being mentioned on request) narrated their ?terrible? experiences separately, they broke down. The eldest among them recalled how as a teacher of the fledgling school in the mid-Eighties, she had contributed to the institution?s growth. She had protested many times against the principal?s inclination to embrace her and other women. She had gradually become isolated and was forced to resign because the ?principal was acting vindictively and making life hell for her?.
What she regretted more was that after her departure, the principal made life miserable for her two sons in the school. Her eldest son had marks deducted from his practical exams, without any reason being cited.
A former history teacher could not survive more than six to seven months. She had joined the school in mid-1997 and soon found that she had become the principal?s target. She said he availed of any excuse to meet her alone. Though she was going through an emotional turmoil after a miscarriage, the principal kept targeting her.
?I was told that if I wanted to retain my job, I would have to gratify his wishes,? she said, breaking down.
The history teacher?s tale of woes did not end even after she resigned in 1998. The DPS principal wielded enormous clout in a small town like Faridabad. Though she was selected as a teacher in a few other schools and was promised a job, the authorities backed out later. She realised that the principal was keeping track of her whereabouts and was determined to prevent her from obtaining employment in Faridabad.
What the third victim, who had worked as a receptionist in the institution for a brief period, narrated was even more damaging. She said he insisted on kissing her. She would be called over to the principal?s office and offered money for a kiss. Once when she was indisposed and lying on a bed in the school clinic, he walked into the deserted room and tried to caress her.
Interventions for Support Healing and Awareness, Sakshi, Shakti Shalini, Jagori, Nirantar and Centre for Advocacy and Research have taken up their cause.
