Washington, Oct. 31 (PTI): Many people from the US and other western countries are travelling to India for less-expensive cosmetic surgeries like rhinoplasty or breast augmentation procedure, a study has found.
The surgeries are not covered by insurance in India. So, they make up a major part of the burgeoning medical tourism market. India may have over one million medical tourists per year, an article in a journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said.

Bhopal (PTI): BJP MLA Asharani and her husband and former MLA Ashok Veer Vikram Singh, alias Bhaiya Raja, have been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for abetting the suicide of their domestic help. Tijjibai set herself ablaze at the couple’s residence after she was assaulted by them.
Manila (PTI): An Indian businessman was abducted by unidentified men on Tuesday. Mike Khemani, who owns a chain of departmental stores in the Philippines, had twice escaped kidnap bids in 2007 and 2009. A security guard was killed and another wounded during the abduction.
Srinagar (PTI): Kashmir received its first snowfall of the season in the upper reaches of Leh and Gulmarg resort and in some higher reaches of the Valley. The minimum temperature in Leh fell to -1.8°C on Wednesday night, while in Gulmarg the mercury dipped to -.2°C, a MeT spokesperson said.

Houston (PTI): An Indian-origin couple have donated $12 million (Rs 73.7 crore) to the University of Dallas. Satish and Yasmin Gupta are both graduates of the university’s MBA programme. The donation, the single largest in the varsity’s 57-year history, will fund a new building.
New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court has directed the BJP and its parliamentary board members to respond to former Rajya Sabha member Ram Jethmalani’s plea challenging his expulsion from the party in May this year. The court directed them to file their replies by January 30.
Male (PTI): Maldivian police have arrested a man for attacking the car of Indian high commissioner Rajeev Shahare, officials said. On Monday, two men riding a motorcycle had thrown stones at the envoy’s car. The arrested 22-year-old man has not been identified.
Chennai (PTI): Bharat Joshi has been appointed the new British deputy high commissioner in Chennai. He will replace Mike Nithavrianakis. “It is a huge honour to represent the UK in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala,” Joshi said.
New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to two more accused in the IPL spot-fixing case. The additional sessions judge released bookies Firoz Farid Ansari and Chandresh Jain on grounds of “parity” with cricketers S. Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and 24 others, who are already out on bail.
