Flier assault

Hyderabad, March 31 (PTI): A Malaysian person of Indian origin was allegedly assaulted by three people, including a co-passenger, on a road in Hyderabad’s Gachibowli after he objected to the passenger “talking” on a cellphone while on a flight from Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

P. Shankar Ram complained that the passenger intercepted his car while he was on way to a Hyderabad hotel and his two bodyguards assaulted him with a belt as he was kicked and punched, causing injuries.

Lion dies

Vadodara (PTI): A nine-year-old lion has been found dead in the Gir forest after a fight among the big cats, forest officials said on Sunday. The broken ribs and injuries around the neck indicated that death was caused because of the fighting.

Drug verdict

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court will pronounce on Monday its verdict on Swiss pharma giant Novartis AG’s plea to get its blood cancer drug Glivec patented in India and restraining Indian companies from manufacturing generic drugs.

SRK lawsuit

Mumbai (PTI): Yesteryear actor Manoj Kumar will file a lawsuit on Monday against Shah Rukh Khan and Eros International, producers of 2007 hit Om Shanti Om, for releasing the film in Japan without removing certain scenes apparently lampooning him. He will also seek damages of Rs 100 crore, he said.

Rape term

Dehra Dun (PTI): A local court in Uttarakhand’s Kashipur on Saturday sentenced a man to seven years in prison for raping a minor in October last year. Manish Saini allegedly abducted the girl from her school and raped her. The victim’s mother had lodged a complaint and a medical examination of the girl had confirmed rape.

Kids charred

Ludhiana (PTI): An infant and her elder brother were charred to death while their two other siblings suffered burn injuries in a village on the outskirts of Ludhiana when their slum dwelling caught fire on Sunday, police said. The fire apparently started from a candle, the police said.

Dog’s evidence

Mumbai, March 31 (PTI): Bombay High Court has relied on a sniffer dog’s evidence to uphold the life sentence of a man in a robbery-and-murder case.

Kathalya alias Ramesh Raja Chavan was accused of entering a home in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar in 2003 and killing three persons in their sleep. Police had recovered a pair of footwear from the building’s compound. The dog was made to sniff the footwear and then taken to eight persons standing in a row. It barked at Ramesh. The process was carried out thrice and every time it picked out Ramesh.

Upholding the lower court’s conviction, the high court said: “It is scientifically accepted that dogs are rated as extremely intelligent animals and that some of their sensibilities are very highly developed and are extremely reliable.”

Missing girl

Bikaner (PTI): A seven-year-old girl has been missing after she inadvertently crossed the Indo-Pakistan border while playing in Khajuwala on Friday, police said. The BSF authorities have contacted their counterparts in Pakistan and informed them about the missing girl. Efforts are on to trace her.

Policy fraud

New Delhi (PTI): Frauds have stolen customer database from ICICI Prudential causing a “loss” of over Rs 90 lakh to the insurance major. Some policyholders surrendered or discontinued the policies which, they suspected, were misused. The firm lodged a complaint on March 3.

Cattle study

Thanjavur (PTI): Cattle in Tamil Nadu are suffering from mineral deficiency because of falling soil health, which is affecting their milk yield and fertility, a study by Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has found.

DSP wife

Pratapgarh (PTI): The wife of slain deputy superintendent of police Zia-ul Haq on Sunday visited Kunda for the first time since he was murdered there earlier this month. Parveen Azad, who was appointed as an officer on special duty after Haq’s murder, stayed there for four hours. She vowed to continue her fight for justice.
