Mumbai, June 23: A storm is brewing over Maharashtra power minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule's alleged links with the sand mafia, less than 24 hours after an uproar over education minister Vinod Tawde's fake engineering degree.

"The documents are being supplied by BJP insiders - their internal battle is spilling all beans," said a top Congress source in the state.

Bawankule, the guardian minister of Nagpur, is accused of instructing revenue department officials to not lodge complaints against the sand mafia after officials seized 10 trucks with illegally mined sand in Nagpur this February.

"Recorded in the minutes of a monthly meeting... Bawankule's role in backing the sand mafia is exposed. The minutes reveal how he pulled rank to instruct the officers doing their duty to go soft on the sand mafia. The officials were told by their seniors how to circumvent the minister's interference by taking quick action against the criminals - even before the minister can call," said Maharashtra Congress leader Sachin Sawant.
