Rahul Gandhi, who is firm on his decision to relinquish the Congress presidency, on Monday paid tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru on the 55th death anniversary of independent India’s first Prime Minister.

“Many democratic nations, as young as India, soon degenerated into dictatorships. On his death anniversary, let us remember Jawaharlal Nehru Ji’s contribution in building strong, independent, modern institutions, that have helped democracy survive in India for over 70 years,” Rahul tweeted.

Nehru, the architect of modern India, laid great emphasis on building institutions of democracy as well as creation of industry and educational infrastructure.

Under Nehru’s leadership, India had defied grim predictions by global political scientists that a country with such vast diversities and complex problems would cease to be a democracy sooner than later.

Rahul, whose Twitter handle still identifies him as Congress president, hasn’t changed his mind about his decision to resign in the wake of the Lok Sabha electoral defeat.

Sources said he was not going to yield and the consideration of alternative names has already begun. Clarity is expected over the next few days.
