New Delhi, July 8: The Indian Institutes of Technology and the National Institutes of Technology will create extra BTech seats this year to accommodate students who did not get their JEE-Main rank on time because of laggard school boards.

About 8,000 students missed out when the JEE-Main rankings were declared by the Central Board of Secondary Education on June 30. The CBSE said the respective school boards had not handed in their Class XII results, needed to calculate the rank.

Although admission to the IITs will be granted on the basis of the students' rank in the JEE-Advanced, the JEE-Main rank is essential for a student to register for common counselling for the IITs and NITs.

After parents and students raised the delay with the respective boards, some boards sent their results to the CBSE last week. The CBSE released the rank of about 1,600 students on Monday, allowing them to register for the first round of counselling.

A few other boards sent the results on Monday and Tuesday and the ranks of these students were announced today. However, they could not register for the counselling.

IIT Bombay director professor Devang Khakhar told The Telegraph that the students who got their JEE-Main rank today would be allowed to register for the second round of counselling on July 13.

Usually, the second round is held to fill up seats that are left over after the first round.

However, Khakhar said students with good rank in JEE-Advanced or JEE-Main will not be denied the institute and branch of their choice even if all seats are filled up. "We will create supernumerary seats to accommodate all deserving students. No student will be denied," he said.

About 1,200 students from Telangana and 100 from Bengal were among the 8,000 who had missed out on June 30.

The IITs and NITs are holding common counselling for the first time, which means a student can get an offer from only one set of institutes and cannot block seats in both.
