New Delhi, May 11 (PTI): People can now link their income-tax PAN with their biometrics-based Aadhaar ID without having to log in or even register on the tax department’s electronic filing portal.
The income tax department said on Thursday that those with a permanent account number and Aadhaar may now go to e-filing portal and click on the link, type in the PAN, Aadhaar number and the exact name given in the Aadhaar card.
The linking will be confirmed after the tax portal verifies the Aadhaar online from the Unique Identification Authority of India, the body that issues the ID.
The government has made it mandatory for those filing income tax returns this year to ensure that the alphanumeric PAN is linked to the 12-digit Aadhaar, or to quote the enrolment number that shows they have registered their fingerprints and iris scans with the Unique Identification Authority of India, which issues the Aadhaar.
“In case of any minor mismatch in Aadhaar name provided, Aadhaar OTP [one-time password] will be required,” the department said in its advisory to taxpayers and individuals.
The OTP will be sent on the registered mobile number and email of the individual.
It urged them to ensure that the date of birth and gender in PAN and Aadhaar are exactly the same, to ensure linking without failure.
Those applying for a PAN after July 1 this year will require an Aadhaar number.
While Aadhaar is issued by the UIDAI to a resident of India, PAN is a ten-digit alphanumeric number issued in the form of a laminated card by the IT department to any person, firm or entity.
