Calcutta, April 28:
The state police has set up a floating police station in the Sunderbans to curb piracy and poaching.
Ten policemen man the police station, which operates from a launch equipped with two wireless sets, searchlights, lifeboats and loud speakers. The policemen are armed with sniper rifles.
Sunderbans abounds in valuable trees like sundari, goran, sal and mohua. It is also rich in a variety of fish, snakes, birds, and peacocks. Most important, it is the abode of the Royal Bengal Tiger, making it a delight for poachers.
Poachers killed four tigers in the Sunderbans last year and escaped with their skins, which fetch a princely sum in the blackmarket, said a forest official.
Besides, pirates from Bangladesh also intrude into Indian waters and kidnap fishermen and loot their mechanised boats. Last year, pirates kidnapped a dozen fishermen.
More than two dozen complaints of looting by pirates and intrusion by poachers have been lodged in the past one year.
