Bangalore: First a Mini Cooper, now an Audi - controversy seems to be snapping at the wheels, er heels, of Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, the mighty Kerala CPM secretary.

A Dubai businessman has accused the son of Balakrishnan, considered the most powerful leader in the state after chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, of swindling him out of Rs 13 crore before escaping to India.

Binoy Kodiyeri, as Balakrishnan's son is known in Kerala, has been accused of defaulting on loans, including one to buy an Audi A8 .

In a document accessed from Dubai by The Telegraph, UAE resident Hasan Ismaeel Abdulla Almarzooqi has accused Binoy Vinodini Balakrishnan - the name on his passport - of absconding from the Gulf country after cheating the travel firm JAAS Tourism LLC of Rs 13 crore.

While it is not clear from the document dated January 5, 2018, if the complaint was lodged with police or the consulate-general of India in Dubai, it has details of transactions allegedly made by Binoy before he returned to India.

Hasan said in the complaint that after several failed attempts to extract the dues, the Dubai public prosecution proclaimed Binoy a wilful defaulter.

On the direction of the prosecution, Hasan claimed his lawyer lodged a case in a Dubai criminal court seeking an Interpol red-corner notice to get Binoy arrested in India and extradite him to the UAE to face charges of financial fraud.

Binoy told a Malayalam channel there was no case against him in Dubai and that the matter had been settled in 2014. "My lawyer is getting proof from the Dubai court to prove my innocence," he said.

According to Hasan's account, Binoy was a friend of Rakhul Krishnan, a partner in JAAS Tourism.

Hasan stated that his company provided collateral security for Binoy to get a car loan of Rs 54.2 lakh for the Audi from the banks the company dealt with. According to Hasan, Binoy took another Rs 7.65 crore to finance his personal businesses in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Nepal and India with the promise of repaying the amount by June 1, 2016.

Hasan accused Binoy of not repaying Rs 36 lakh of the car loan, and having "escaped from the UAE to India" before the due date of repaying the loan he had taken for business.

"Later, I came to know that he had borrowed money not only from my company or Mr Rakhul Krishnan, but also from many banks and individuals in the UAE," Hasan said in the document.

Hasan said he deposited three cheques issued by Binoy as surety in 2017, but they bounced.

Hasan also accused Balakrishnan of not honouring his promise to Krishnan and his father, who met the CPM leader in Thiruvananthapuram. The leader had apparently promised to resolve the issue.

Balakrishnan, who had landed in a spot of bother after it emerged that a Mini Cooper he had used during a yatra last year belonged to an accused in a gold smuggling case, brushed aside the latest allegations and said: "There is no case against my son and he is ready to face any legal procedure."

The leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, Ramesh Chennithala, sought a clarification on the allegation.

CPI leader Kanam Rajendran refused to comment, but said: "It's their internal matter. This won't be an issue in the Front."

State BJP president Kummanam Rajashekaran demanded a probe by the Enforcement Directorate.
