New Delhi, April 22: Delhi police today quizzed T.T.V. Dinakaran, nephew of the jailed Sasikala whose AIADMK Amma faction heads the Tamil Nadu government, in connection with his alleged attempt to bribe Election Commission officials to get the parent party's "two leaves" symbol for his group.
Dinakaran reached the crime branch office at Chanakyapuri at 3.30pm amid heavy police arrangement and his lawyers were not allowed to accompany him. He was grilled for eight hours. The crime branch will quiz the AIADMK Amma deputy general secretary tomorrow also.
Mediapersons were not allowed inside the premises.
Police sources claimed they had got evidence that suggested Dinakaran was in constant touch with an alleged middleman, Sukesh Chandrasekar, who is now in police custody.
They said the AIADMK Amma leader had offered the bribe through Chandrasekar ahead of the now-cancelled April 12 bypoll to the R.K. Nagar Assembly seat, which was represented by Jayalalithaa at the time of her death late last year.
A senior official said Dinakaran was asked about the money trail, his association with Chandrasekar and whether he had met any Election Commission official.
"We are examining his call details, WhatsApp messages and text messages," the official said.
Dinakaran has denied the charge and said it was a conspiracy to "defame" and "destroy" his organisation politically. He also denied having ever met Chandrasekar. "If needed we will confront them with each other," another official said.
Chandrasekar, 27, was arrested from a Delhi hotel on April 17 on the charge of helping Dinakaran bribe election officials. Police have booked Dinakaran, Chandrasekar and unnamed others on charges of corruption and criminal conspiracy. During interrogation, Chandrasekar had revealed several names, including that of one Election Commission official he was in touch with to strike the deal.
"But we are verifying all his claims," another official said.
The police had seized Rs 1.3 crore from Chandrasekar, along with a BMW and a Mercedes. The sources claimed he had checked into a five-star hotel posing as an MP and was in touch with Dinakaran even on the day he was arrested.
"Chandrasekar had struck a Rs 50-crore deal with the AIADMK Amma faction," an official said.
