Congress attacks government over child rapes

The Congress on Saturday blasted the Narendra Modi government for creating hype about its programmes for the girl child and doing little else, after the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of the alarming rise in cases of child rape.

Describing the alarming figures as an outcome of the government’s “insensitivity and apathy”, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said: “Merely lip service & hype cannot be a substitute for securing women & children.”

“As per the data collated by the Supreme Court, 24,212 FIRs have been registered from January 1, 2019, to June 30, 2019, regarding child rape. Only 911 cases have been disposed of so far, which is merely 4 per cent of the total.”
