Bad weather delays shift of Siachen 9 to Delhi

The bodies of the nine soldiers who buried alive by an avalanche that wiped out their post on the Siachen glacier are likely to be brought here on Monday if the weather permits.

New Delhi, Feb 14 (PTI): The bodies of the nine soldiers who buried alive by an avalanche that wiped out their post on the Siachen glacier are likely to be brought here on Monday if the weather permits.

The weather at Khardung La remained extremely poor on Sunday, a senior Army officer said. The bodies were brought down to the Siachen base camp by helicopter on Saturday.

”Plan to further move the mortal remains to Bangalore, Chennai, Trivandrum, Madurai, Pune, Hyderabad, is in place,” he said.

A JCO and eight soldiers of 19 Madras together with an Army Medical Corps nursing assistant were by an avalanche on February 3. Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad was miraculously dug out alive on February 9, but he died in the army's top hospital later without regaining consciousness.

Those killed were Subedar Nagesha T.T., Havildar Elumalai M. of Dukkam Parai village, Vellore district, Tamil Nadu; Lance Havildar S. Kumar of Kumanan Thozhu village, Theni district, Tamil Nadu; Lance Naik Sudheesh of Monroethuruth village, Kollam district, Kerala; Sepoy Mahesha P.N. of HD Kote village, Mysore district, Karnataka; Sepoy Ganesan of Chokkathevan Patti village, Madurai district, Tamil Nadu; Sepoy Rama Moorthy of Gudisatana Palli village, Krishnagiri District, Tamil Nadu; Sepoy Mustaq Ahmed of Parnapalle village, Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh; and Sepoy (Nursing Assistant) Suryawanshi S.V. of Maskarwadi village, Satara district, Maharashtra.
