Calcutta, March 26 :     Choreographer and composer Ananda Shankar died in a city nursing home this morning. He was 56 and is survived by his actress-dancer wife Tanushree Shankar, daughter Shreenanda and mother Amala, also a renowned dancer. Ananda Shankar was admitted to the nursing home early this month for an hernia operation. Though the operation was successful, his condition later deteriorated and he was shifted to the intensive care unit of the nursing home. He passed away at around 5.45 am. Son of legendary dancer Uday Shankar and nephew of sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, Ananda Shankar travelled to many parts of the world with his ballet troupe, the Ananda Shankar Centre for Performing Art. While composing, Ananda Shankar tried to blend eastern and western music using traditional instruments of both. He also directed music for several Bengali films. The cremation will take place at Keoratala tomorrow.
