New Delhi, April 2: The executive council of Aligarh Muslim University today recommended a retired bureaucrat, a former army officer and three academics as possible candidates for vice-chancellor.

The recommendations will be examined by the AMU Court, the institute's apex body. According to the AMU Act, the court will send a panel of three names to the President, the university Visitor.

The five persons whose names have been recommended by the executive council are Javed Usmani, a retired civil servant; Seyed E. Hasnain, a former University of Hyderabad VC; Furqan Qamar, the secretary general of the Association of Indian Universities; Tariq Mansoor, the principal of JN Medical College in AMU; and retired brigadier S. Ahmad Ali, Pro-VC of AMU.

A special meeting of the council chaired by the AMU VC, Lt Gen. (retired) Zameer Uddin Shah, considered a panel of 24 names, obtained through wide consultation, a media statement issued by the university said. While Shah's tenure ends in May 2017, the process of appointing VCs at times takes about a year.

Earlier this month, Shah had written to Supreme Court judges, VCs of other universities and former VCs of AMU, including Hamid Ansari, now the country's Vice-President, to recommend names within a week. Ansari has said the council should set up a search panel instead of seeking nominations.
