A Dalit community youth was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people over an old enmity in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, police said adding they have arrested eight persons so far in this connection. The deceased, Nitin Ahirwar aka Lalu, in the age group of 18 to 20 years was beaten up on August 24 following which the police registered a case against nine identified and three-four unidentified persons under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 307 (attempt to murder). The youth died when he was being taken for treatment to a hospital in Sagar, following which IPC section 302 (murder) and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were added.
ISRO released a graph of the temperature variation on lunar surface with increase in depth measured by the ChaSTE payload onboard Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander module. According to the space agency, Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE) measured the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil around the south pole, to understand the thermal behaviour of the Moon's surface.
Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan admitted misplacing a confidential diplomatic cable as he was interrogated by Pakistan's top investigative agency at the Attock Jail in a case filed under the Official Secrets Act for wrongful use of the classified document. Khan had waved a document at a rally days before his ouster as prime minister in April 2022, saying it was proof of foreign conspiracy.
Unidentified men torched three abandoned houses at New Lambulane locality in Manipur's capital Imphal. Soon after the incident, people gathered in the area and demanded state and central forces deployed in the locality to allow them to enter the area, officials said, adding that the security forces later fired a few rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
Four people were killed and several others injured in a blast at an illegal firecracker factory in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. Among those injured were many women and children. Police said they suspect that several people are still stuck under the rubble.
The Adani Group may be looking at taking over a Greek port and turning it into a key gateway for Indian exports to Europe. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that a few more political parties were likely to join the opposition INDIA bloc during its upcoming meeting in Mumbai. The 26-party opposition alliance, which has been formed to jointly take on the ruling BJP at the Centre in next year's elections, has already met twice in less than one month, first in Patna on June 23 and then in Bangalore on July 17-18.
Ahead of the G20 Summit, pro-Khalistan messages were found in at least five Delhi Metro stations. Police sources identified the stations as Shivaji Park, Madipur, Paschim Vihar, Udyog Nagar, and Maharaja Surajmal Stadium. A purported video was released by the banned outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) which showed the defaced walls of the metro stations.
As many as 73 farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district from January to July this year, including 13 last month, as per the district administration data. A committee comprising the district collector, zilla parishad chief executive officer and superintendent of police had declared 745 farmers, who committed suicide between 2001 and 2022, as eligible for government compensation and 329 deceased cultivators as ineligible, as per the district administration.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has unveiled plans for tough new laws which would mean those convicted of heinous murders will face life behind bars for the rest of their lives, with no chance of being considered for parole or early release. The new law will place a legal expectation on judges to hand down whole-life orders, except in extremely limited circumstances.
